The  design  process  can  take  many  different  forms  for  me.  Because  I  work  predominantly  with  the  CAD  design  system,  I carry  my  laptop  close  by  my  side.However,  the  design  has  to  leap  off  the  screen  at  some  point  to  become  a  tactile and  more ‘living’  piece  of  art.

This  is  why  I  like  to  travel  regularly,  and  gain  my  inspiration  based  on  personal  experience. As  well  as the  Montville  studio, I  often  meet  with  my  clients  in  their  own  homes. In  this  environment,  the  process  becomes  a  more personal journey  for  them  and  also  myself,  as  they  are  allowing  me  to  get  to  know  their stories,  personalities and relationships in  order  to  help  bring  a  design  idea  to  life!

The  first  thing  will  be  to  establish  what  they  want  made,  of  course.  However,  the  final  product  will  be  formed  from  a  more  tactile,  ‘hands-­‐on’ process,  when  I  get  back  to  the  workbench  and can  collate  all  these  experiences  into  a  custom  make.

For  my  own  creations,  I  like  to  travel  to  locations  which  inspire  me  most,  and  bring  me  closest  to  the  origins  of  the  gemstone’s  origins, such  as  my  recent  visit  to  the  opal  mines  in  CooberPedy,  South  Australia.  Acquiring  beautiful  new gemstones  is  a  great  way  to  fire  up  the  creative  sparks  in  designing  a  new  piece  of  jewellery!
